St. Columba School was vacant for over a year when New Community Corporation saw an opportunity to bring better educational opportunities to Newark children. In poor condition, with inadequate electric service, malfunctioning boilers, leaky roof, drafty windows and many life safety violations, there were many positive qualities like oak doors, glass transoms between hallways and classrooms, high ceilings and other unique architectural features. A primary change to the building was made by installing sprinklers throughout. This investment allowed changes to the floor plan while providing occupants the best available protection in the event of fire. New fire alarm systems, emergency lights and exit signage brought this 100 year old building up to current standards. The hallways, gyms, auditorium, cafeteria, stairwells and other components were all able to be renovated in an effort to continue to bring quality education to area residents. Classrooms were upgraded with new flooring, cabinetry, indirect lighting and replacement windows.
